BCM531 - Main shaft descent, hog focus

(6:37) Level 4 ('The Silent Cartographer') on Heroic. Following up on the last part of the previous movie, I now focus on use of the Warthog, the idea being to use it all the way down, rather than dropping on foot.

Released December 7th 2024, gameplay recorded December 4th-6th 2024.

Commentary

00:02 Some teetering on a prong, to get things off to a start.

00:21 Went too far right!

00:34 A nice spin onto the fourth shelf, though I don't pause there. I try backing off the edge, but I'm immediately ejected.

00:53 Another nice fourth shelf landing. This time I drive forwards off the end, and at least I'm not immediately ejected. But the hog fails to get slowed by hitting something.

01:14 Again the hog settles on the fourth shelf, though this time not upright. Stacker didn't make it. After flipping the hog upright I continue the descent, but it's a bust.

02:10 An unusual fall after hitting a prong. The hog has almost no rotation.

02:23 On this attempt I get ejected onto the fifth shelf. Seeing the hog falling, I step off to give pursuit, and end up alive in the trough, cushioned first by the hog and then by the sloping sides of the trough. I subsequently blast the hog out (a bit messily, and I really didn't need the plasma grenade), then drive off the edge to end up in the bottom area on that side. I haven't got familiar with all the geometry though, so I wasn't sure exactly how to drive the hog off. So it's rather clumsy.

Note: see that needler at 3:17? I hadn't attacked any covies on this play, so how come it's there? I assume it was from one of the Grunts I killed at the security door during the set-up work.

03:26 Across multiple hours of play, this was the only time Stacker gave a whoop, and that's really why I included this clip. It was amusing. Tragically though, his jovial demeanour was destined to be short-lived.

03:48 Brief teetering on a prong, then the traditional fall to our deaths.

04:02 This sort of thing happens occasionally. Nice example of settling on a prong.

04:33 Grabbed a ride on the chain-gun here, after flipping the hog. Didn't seem to help!

04:50 For the second time in the movie, I reach the trough, and it was effectively all in one go. Amusing dynamics, but as before, the descent wasn't all in the hog.

05:11 Ejected on the fourth level, I find that the Marines are out on a prong. Some fun with the covies ensues (edited down for brevity).

06:08 Pretty good case of pinballing here. I was starting to think I might be able to make it! But after teetering on a fifth level prong, the hog went straight down without getting slowed by anything, so I didn't make it.

06:24 Nasty tumble off a prong, bringing things to a close.

Closing remarks So, I didn't manage a full descent in the hog yet, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Hopefully I'll be able to manage it later though. I may just need an extra big dose of luck.

For this movie I was using the same set-up as before except that on each playing session, I temporarily modified it to avoid getting arrival checkpoints (see my article), so I wouldn't have to keep ejecting my disc and reloading. I wasn't interested in making use of a part-way checkpoint in getting down.
