BCM539 - Light-bridge area descent, using the first ramp
(5:53) Level 2 ('Halo') on Heroic. A few days ago I was reminded that you can descend to the bottom of Halo's light-bridge area. I was pretty sure I'd done that before, but it was so long ago that I'd forgotten about it. Reacquainting myself with the general idea, I quickly got down afresh and realised I needed to get movie-making pronto, to cover this excellent trick (from back in 2002). Here I focus on using the first ramp. I'll cover the second one in the next movie, plus I'll soon have an article to post.

Commentary
00:02 (Basic set-up) There's no special work for this first set-up. I just get the hog and some Marines, and get a checkpoint just before the light-bridge area as usual. Mind you, I'd kept all Marines in good health by quickly slaughtering all covies where they were dropped.
00:27 (Failure) Bit too much bounce on my first try, and I get ejected.
00:52 (Failure) This is even worse. The spin was too strong. A bad hit (nowhere near flat to the wall), and off-target too.
01:12 (Success) A success at last, on my twelfth try. Pretty good hit, and although the hog spins on the slide, we reach the bottom okay and I have a brief look around to give some idea of what things are like.
02:05 (Success) Another descent, this time spinning the other way. Includes a bit of Grunt splattering at the start, which was purely for fun.
02:32 (New set-up) I now set things up afresh with a more convenient checkpoint, courtesy of some checkpoint delaying (my own idea). To make for voice variety I also have new Marines, with Johnson in the side-seat and an aussie on the gun.
03:00 (Failure) No luck on my first try. Bounced out.
03:18 (Failure) With this new set-up there's a Grunt and an Elite who are both very susceptible to being splattered even without me trying, and this time I get them both. No descent though. The hog starts to go sideways, but it hasn't settled enough and we're ejected. Incidentally, a plasma ball caught the hog just after the jump, but that didn't matter.
03:34 (Success) From here onwards I adopt the practice of taking my foot off the gas while the hog is in flight (the power being redundant of course, though you might enjoy the noise, as I was doing earlier). So things are a bit quieter. A nice descent here, straight down the middle of the strip.
03:56 (Success) After some gratuitous splattering I manage another descent. On the way I introduce the theme of moving the camera around for nice or novel views, and also point out that you can let the hog slide down freely, i.e. without applying power.
04:19 (Success) Nice side-view of the impact and slide on this descent. Once again I'm doing free sliding.
04:36 (Failure) Somewhat of a sideways impact this time, and we're quickly ejected. Good comedy line from Johnson, which is partly why I included this clip.
04:53 (Success) On this descent I deliberately miss the strip, to show that you can still get down okay. We do a lot of spinning though, and get spilled out at the bottom.
05:17 (Success) A nice final descent after some splattering fun. We hit the strip pretty much sideways but with very little bounce, and slide down with no trouble.
Closing remarks Okay, that's the first ramp covered then. In the next movie I'll cover the second with a super-convenient set-up, and hopefully there'll be room to include a bit more exploration of the bottom, which there wasn't much of in this movie.
Very glad I was reminded of this trick. That happened when I was commenting on a vehicle collecting video from Spasmodic Gaming. I've been having a great time with it and it was absolutely ideal for movie coverage. Really should've covered this a few hundred movies ago!
