BCM140 - Freakiness and fun, assorted clips

(5:31) Various levels and difficulties. My tenth 'freakiness and fun' compilation shows 21 freaky or amusing incidents, most of which occurred while recording footage for my usual movies - so you may recognize some of the situations.

00:02 (Farewell Captain Knees) On this kill 'em all speed run I'm surprised at the sight which greets me when I skip the cutscene. What's Keyes doing up there? I suspect he's being supported by me. Note that I'm in a nonstandard position, closer to the bridge screen than usual (e.g. compare with the view seen in KSR4). Perhaps this freakiness was caused by the unusual close presence of two crewmen. Here's what I'm thinking. To prepare for the cutscene, the game drops Keyes and/or me in a particular place, but because of the two crewmen things got a bit cramped, and he wasn't able to settle on the ground because I was too close.

I elect to continue the run without delay, hoping it would be a good one (which would be made all the more memorable by this freaky start), but it wasn't. I wish now that I'd instead hung around to get some additional views and to verify whether he was supported by me.

I later spent at least 40 minutes trying to reproduce this freaky situation to get the whole cutscene with Keyes up in the air, hoping to make an amusing movie of it. But unfortunately it was very labour intensive due to the fact that once the cutscene starts, you can't revert to a pre-cutscene checkpoint. Because of that, I was having to restart the level for each try. But I may give it more tries later, as I think the result could be worthwhile. Let me also say that I've triggered the cutscene hundreds of times in the course of attempting kill 'em all speed runs, and this freakiness has only ever happened once. 00:18 (Needling pursuit) Bridge descent time! After nudging the Elite off the ledge, I give pursuit with a vertical descent cushioned by the cliff base, then deliver a clip of needles with explosive effect. February 2011 footage from when I was recording for BCM29. Level 5, Heroic.

00:37 (Big blue obstruction) I keep clear of a swiping Hunter while doing some needling, and eventually he amusingly blocks a Grunt who I then tag. June 2014 footage from when I was recording for BCM106. Level 4, Legendary.

00:55 (Deflected grenade) Watch my first plasma grenade. It gets deflected into the distance and settles near an Elite. That guy normally runs across the battlefield, but it looks like he pauses to check out my grenade. Bad idea. BLAM! One of the Marines comments "I didn't know these things could fly, ha-ha!". 01:13 (Wrong head, wrong time) After taking an Elite to the point of death with pistol fire, I briefly back off to reload. When I step back out to deliver the finishing shot, a Marine puts his head in exactly the wrong place as I fire. Oops! Amusing though. March 2015 footage from when I was recording for KSR3. 01:24 (Ghost tag one-two) If you ever need to take out these two Ghosts on foot without a rocket launcher, here's how you can do it without much trouble, as long as you don't get run over. Incidentally, I deliberately fired on the ship to cause the Ghosts to head my way. March 2014 footage from when I was attempting a kill 'em all speed run on foot with covie weapons. 01:40 (Danger: falling hogs) In this rockslide megabattle I'm using the plateau alley defence plan. I've parked the hog where I can blast it down at the right moment, and it works nicely, squashing a blue Elite. Actually that guy really had a bad day. He gets needles from the front, a plasma ball from behind, and then SPLAT! - a hog from above. February 2015 footage from when I was recording for a possible rockslide megabattle movie (aborted). 01:54 (Through the wall) In BCM104 I showed an example of the Grunt going through the brown wall on the right, but here's a nice example of him going through the grey wall on the left. This time you get to peek through the wall, and can see him falling into nothingness, before vanishing. May 2014 footage, a few days after releasing BCM104. Level 5, Heroic.

02:13 (Is he dead yet?) Yep, it's 'Jackal versus cyborg' again. In BCM105 I gave two examples of a 'rocket yo-yo' in which I rocket him back from the distant wall, but here's one last nice example, finishing with a whack. May 2014 footage from when I was recording for BCM105. Level 4, Legendary.

02:26 (What just happened?) Here's something very freaky. In the course of trying to get the turret detached via mid-air reboarding (to then ram it in mid-air), I suddenly shoot a long distance away from the ship. I think this must've been an extreme form of bumping. On rare occasions you get bumped away from the ship a short distance, but this was much more pronounced, and even sounds weird! 02:52 (Hotshot turret) In this simple bit of fun the detached turret targets a distant sniper, and gets him. December 2013 footage from the day after I recorded the footage for BCM88. Level 5, Heroic.

03:08 (Spore hater) This Grunt has really got it in for a spore blocked by the stationary shield. The spore partly sticks out through the shield, enabling needles to pile in with explosive effect. That silly spore was a bit too keen to get nibbling! March 2015 footage from when I was recording for BCM137. Level 9, Legendary.

03:18 (Jackal trap) At the end of this trough defence in a twin bridges megabattle, I find a Jackal who's become trapped under the leg of my Banshee. It's a long time before he sees me - and I bet he wishes he hadn't! September 2014 footage from when I was recording for BCM113. Level 5, Heroic.

03:57 (Stairway tag) On this kill 'em all speed run I charge up the stairs, headshooting a Grunt on the way, then score a rather nice tag. I don't normally go for a tag like that, as it carries the danger of making Elites dive off the edge, whereas I want them to stay up top for quick slaying. 04:11 (Elite on a Wraith) When I lift up a Wraith to eject the pilot, he ends up on top of another Wraith. Not for long though; I blast him before he can do any damage with his plasma rifle. September 2013 footage from when I was recording for BCM81. Level 5, Legendary.

04:24 (Spooky needler) This needler seems to be constantly reloading itself! Although it's rare, it's not that rare, and I expect most players have come across this behaviour at some point. Still, I thought it was worth including in one of these movies, as it is rather odd. Maybe it happens sometimes when the needler is being reloaded as the holder dies? 04:42 (Mistimed jump) In the course of having fun with the Wraith pilot at the tower, I dismount from the hog intending to jump onto the Wraith and tag the pilot as he clambers in. But I make a mess of things and end up under the Wraith, much to the pilot's amusement. I'll get him for that! June 2014 footage from when I was recording for BCM108. Level 5, Legendary.

04:53 (Air target) After throwing a frag in this hangar battle (platform survival), a Grunt body gets launched in a chain reaction, and I can't resist blasting it with my shotty as it passes. October 2014 footage from the day after releasing BCM117. Level 9, Normal.

05:02 (Lucky passage) In this attempt at turret detachment I fail to flip the ship, but at least I end up on the bridge. Not in the normal way though. I get a lucky passage up through the gap between the bridges! March 2014 footage from when I was recording for BCM99. Level 5, Heroic.

05:14 (Too close) Performing a top pass defence in a rockslide megabattle, I get a bit too close to where some grenades are going off, and get sent flying along the cliff by a chain reaction. Dang - that battle was going so well! February 2015 footage from when I was recording for a possible movie (aborted). Level 2, Heroic.

Closing remarks I hadn't intended to do this tenth compilation quite so soon (the previous one being BCM134 on March 4th), but in an otherwise idle moment I started tentatively piecing it together in advance, curious to see what I could come up with. Then when time ticked on and I still didn't have any other movie ready, I decided to release it forthwith.

It was nice to have some POA footage to include for once, thanks to my recent kill 'em all speed running. I haven't had any POA footage in this sub-series before! In particular, the freaky end to the bridge cutscene made for a memorable start to the movie I think.

With this release my reserves of 'FF' footage have got down to a more manageable level than they have been for a long time. I've got about 13 minutes worth earmarked for possible use, but some of those clips may never get used in this sub-series - either because I decide they're not quite strong enough or because - in the case of a few - I might try to theme an entire movie on what they relate to.
