BCM534 - Main shaft descent, Marines to the bottom

(6:30) Level 4 ('The Silent Cartographer') on Heroic. Back in BCM531 I didn't have any luck doing the whole descent in the hog. But after exploring the alcoves as seen in the last movie, a new plan came to mind. Check out the glorious results in this fifth instalment on descent into the main shaft. The clips are in chronological order, giving representation of how things progressed.

Released December 17th 2024, gameplay recorded December 9th and 12th 2024.

Commentary

00:02 (Checkpoint in the alcove) This first clip shows the set-up. Sailing down to the left alcove and getting an arrival checkpoint, that became my starting point for trying to go the rest of the way with the Marines.

00:15 (Some failures) Here are two early failures. I'm trying to reach the prongs to get slowed.

00:42 (Cyborg at the bottom) After hitting the tip of the seventh prong, I get ejected and actually end up alive at the bottom. That's something at least, but I lost the Marines.

01:05 (Trough debacle) This was about fifteen minutes after starting my attempts from the alcove. Again doing a spin off, which is what I'd focused on to begin with, the hog hits the seventh prong and falls into the trough, with passengers ejected but alive.

What I then wanted was to have the hog out of the trough (there's a flat area at one end), and with the Marines aboard. There was a problem though: I couldn't just drive out with Stacker (although I knew I could blast the hog out). I wasn't sure how to proceed, but while trying something I got unexpectedly splattered when using melee on the hog. So that was that. It was only later that I thought of a way to work things, if such a situation were to arise again.

01:51 (One Marine down) All the previous footage was from a spell of play on December 9th. The remaining footage is from the 12th, when I resumed my attempts. I was now focused on trying to hit the tip of the seventh prong, as that looked to be the most promising target. Here, the hog falls through the hole and lands just beyond the trough. Stacker dies from the impact (despite having greater health than the seated guy), but with a clumsy jump I reach the bottom with the remaining Marine.

02:26 (Slight hitch) In this interesting failure the hog gets embedded in the prong (which likely relates to the freaky incident in BCM532). I'm actually able to flip the hog and immediately reboard, but we all die.

02:51 (Success at last) Not long afterwards, I finally got my first success, after making it onto the top of the lower complex. Just missed the hole, as the caption says. Proceeding with caution, I decided to slide down the big second drop. My attempted spin down onto the final floor (the bottom) was a clumsy mess, but thankfully no one died. After getting the guys bacak aboard, I used a dropped needler to improvise some celebration (didn't have any fireworks).

04:39 (Blast method begins) A little later, I initiated a new approach to leaving the alcove, namely using a grenade blast instead of doing a spin. Here are just two failures among many.

04:04 (Success, bounced left) The new approach yielded multiple successes, allowing me to pick and choose here for the movie. This was the second. The hog gets bounced left onto the first floor and I negotiate the subsequent drops by cautiously sliding.

05:22 (Success, going right) This time the hog lands very nicely just past the hole, and I go the rest of the way in a relatively speedy way, covering the final two drops with one long spinning jump. I'd become more confident by now.

05:51 (Success, bounced left) In this last success the hog goes left onto the second floor (I tried to give the hog some spin so we stayed upright), leaving just the final drop. And as in the previous example, we're in the hog all the way; no ejections.

Closing remarks So, a successful plan! I've revised my article accordingly.
